ANTIPOLO CITY— In his circular issued for the Feast of Saint John Marie Vianney, patron saint of parish priests, Bishop Ruperto Cruz Santos (Bishop of Antipolo) issued a stirring call to all clergy to reflect on the priesthood as one of humble service, simplicity, and unwavering trust in God.
“May our people see in us not just ministers, but spiritual fathers, servants of grace, and witnesses to eternity,” Bishop Santos wrote—emphasizing that the priestly vocation extends beyond mere ministry functions.
Drawing inspiration from the Curé of Ars, Saint John Marie Vianney, the bishop quoted Scripture and Canon Law to remind priests that their calling is rooted in service, purity, pastoral zeal, and spiritual fatherhood. He urged priests to lead lives that make it easier for the faithful to believe in God’s presence through their witness.
Bishop Santos challenged the clergy to embrace lives of simplicity and holiness, citing Vianney’s legendary devotion—including preaching, confession ministry, and Eucharistic celebration even in solitude—as model virtues
This pastoral message is released at a time when the Church continues to contend with both internal difficulties and societal scrutiny. Bishop Santos encourages a renewal in priestly identity—as shepherds who give not only sacraments, but also their lives, walking alongside their flocks with generosity and humility
As the Church remembers Saint John Marie Vianney’s witness, the faithful are invited to pray for priests—that they may remain steadfast in their calling and shine as authentic reflections of Christ’s love and service. “Let us continue to be in communion with our Church in praying for our dear spiritual fathers,” Bishop Santos added
