TANAY, RIZAL – San Ildefonso de Toledo Parish has released an official statement on August 15 clarifying the recent renaming of the image of the Blessed Virgin in their church from Virgen ng Guadalupe to La Purísima Concepción.

The move, which sparked mixed reactions, was described by the parish as a result of careful historical study, theological reflection, and a formal petition submitted to the Bishop of Antipolo by parish leaders and representatives.

According to the parish, the change is not simply about a name but about faithfully preserving and passing on the Church’s history, theology, and devotion. They acknowledged that the process could have been communicated more clearly from the beginning and asked for understanding, especially from those who felt confused or hurt.

The statement referenced historical inconsistencies, including a 1969 article by local historian Simeon Bendaña y Reyes, who admitted confusion regarding the image’s original identity. Earlier records, including a 1904 Jesuit publication and a 1975 book on Marian images, both identified the image as La Purísima Concepción—supporting the parish’s current position.

While acknowledging the deep devotion many have to the Virgen de Guadalupe, the parish explained that the Tanay image lacks the distinct iconographic features of the Guadalupe apparition, such as the sunburst, moon, and angel. The similarities, they said, appear to be the result of tradition or mistaken identity.

The parish emphasized that the decision was made in faith and in unity with the broader Catholic tradition, especially considering that the Franciscan founders of the parish were known for their strong devotion to La Purísima Concepción.

They also announced the establishment of the San Ildefonso de Toledo Parish – Center for Marian Studies, aimed at deepening understanding and devotion to Mary. Programs such as the Block Rosary, Marian exhibits, and prayer events will be expanded.

Calling for unity, the parish appealed to all to refrain from division and personal attacks. Quoting Bishop Ruperto Santos, they reminded the faithful that Mary’s image should be “a call to compassion, humility, and unity,” not a source of conflict.

In conclusion, the parish stated that correcting historical inaccuracies is not an erasure of tradition but a clarification that strengthens faith. They reaffirmed their commitment to passing on a devotion that is truthful, faithful, and leads to Christ.
