Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr. Rufino “Jun” Sescon Jr., a member of the Archdiocese of Manila, as the new bishop of the Diocese of Balanga, which encompasses the province of Bataan.

At 52 years old, Fr. Jun Sescon currently serves as the rector of the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, more commonly known as Quiapo Church, a major center of devotion to the Black Nazarene, especially during its annual “Traslacion” procession.

Throughout his priestly vocation, Fr. Sescon has held several significant roles, including personal secretary to the late Cardinal Jaime Sin.

Before his current position at Quiapo Church, he was chaplain at Greenbelt Chapel and served as priest-in-charge at the Mother of Hope Chapel in Landmark, both located in Makati City.

The diocesan seat has been vacant since July 2023, following the transfer of Bishop Ruperto Santos to the Diocese of Antipolo
