Jesus told His disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ For a long time, the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her, lest she finally come and strike me.’” The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of His chosen ones who call out to Him day and night? Will He be slow to answer them? I tell you, He will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?”
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable that strikes deep into the heart of perseverance. The image is simple—a widow, powerless and alone, pleads before a judge who neither fears God nor respects people. Yet through her persistence, she wins justice. Jesus uses this image to remind His disciples of one of the most essential attitudes of faith: to pray always and never lose heart.
The widow represents all who suffer injustice, who cry to God day and night for help, for healing, for hope. Her persistence is not about nagging God, but about faith that refuses to give up. Jesus wants us to see that if even an unjust judge gives in to persistence, how much more will a loving God listen to His children? God may not answer in the way or time we expect, but He always responds—with mercy, wisdom, and love.
This parable also reveals something about prayer itself. Prayer is not meant to change God’s heart—it is meant to shape ours. The widow’s persistence forms her into a woman of courage and endurance. Likewise, constant prayer shapes us into people of trust, humility, and faith. Every time we return to God in prayer—especially when we are tired, doubtful, or hurt—we proclaim our faith that He is good and that His timing is perfect.
But Jesus ends the story with a haunting question: “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” It’s as if He turns the mirror toward us. Do we still pray when life feels silent? Do we trust when our prayers seem unanswered? Or have we grown weary, losing faith along the way?
Faith is not measured by how often our prayers are answered, but by how firmly we hold on even when nothing seems to change. Persistent prayer keeps our hearts alive. It keeps us connected to the One who never abandons us.
Today, let us ask ourselves: Do I persevere in prayer, or do I easily give up? When God seems silent, do I still believe He is listening? Am I faithful in bringing my joys and sorrows before Him every day?
Let us pray for the grace to become like the persistent widow—humble, patient, and steadfast in faith. May our hearts never grow weary in turning to God, trusting that His justice, mercy, and love will always prevail.
