“Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom… Be ready, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to His disciples with both tenderness and urgency. He begins with words of comfort: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it has pleased the Father to give you the Kingdom.” But then He immediately calls them to action: be ready, stay awake, be like servants waiting for their master to return. This mixture of deep reassurance and serious responsibility teaches us something essential about Christian life—it is a balance between trust and readiness.

Jesus invites us to trust in the love of the Father. We are not abandoned or forgotten. God wants to give us His Kingdom. But this gift does not mean we can be careless or passive. Jesus is clear: the faithful servant is the one who stays alert, who is found doing his duty when the Master returns. Those who live with responsibility and love—even when no one is watching—are the ones who are truly ready to meet the Lord.

The message is simple, but the challenge is great. It is easy to become spiritually lazy. We get distracted by work, problems, routines, or pleasures. We say, “There’s still time. I’ll pray tomorrow. I’ll change when I’m older.” But Jesus tells us, “At an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” That is not a threat—it’s a call to live every day as if it matters, because it does. Every word we say, every act of kindness we show, every moment of honesty, patience, or sacrifice is seen by the Lord.

He also warns about the danger of knowing what is right, yet not doing it. “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much.” This reminds us that with every gift comes responsibility. The more we know God, the more we are called to live like Him. The more we have received—faith, time, talents, truth—the more we are asked to use them well. Christianity is not just about believing—it’s about serving, acting, and loving faithfully even when it’s difficult.

So Jesus calls us to live with open hands and watchful hearts. He wants us to let go of the things that weigh us down and be free to serve. He wants us to live every moment with purpose, not fearfully but joyfully. Because when He returns—and He will—what He longs to find is not perfection, but faithfulness.

Today’s Gospel invites us to ask: Am I ready to meet the Lord—not only at the end of life, but today? Am I living with awareness, or am I spiritually asleep? Am I generous with what God has given me, or am I wasting time, opportunities, or love?

Let us ask Jesus to help us become like the faithful servant—awake, humble, generous, and joyful. Let us live not with fear, but with courage, using every day as a chance to say “yes” to God.

Lord, may we live ready—not anxious or afraid, but faithful and free, so that when You return, we may open the door to You with joy. Amen.
