The Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on September 8th, marks the Nativity of Mary, the mother of Jesus. This special day is an opportunity for Catholics to honor Mary’s pivotal role in salvation history and to deepen their devotion. To celebrate the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary you may do the following:
1. Attending Mass
One of the most significant ways to celebrate the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary is by participating in the Eucharist. Attend a special Mass or a novena dedicated to Mary. This communal worship not only honors her but also strengthens our faith and unity as a community. Many parishes will have a special Mass or liturgy focused on Mary, so check with your local church for schedules.
2. Family Gatherings
Hosting a family gathering is a wonderful way to celebrate Mary’s birthday. Use this occasion to come together in prayer and fellowship. Share a meal, and include prayers that honor Mary. This can be a meaningful way to build family bonds and focus on the virtues of Mary—her humility, purity, and devotion to God.
3. Offering Flowers
Bringing flowers to a statue or image of Mary is a traditional expression of devotion. Flowers symbolize beauty and purity and are a simple yet profound way to honor the Blessed Virgin. Arrange a bouquet of her favorite flowers or those symbolically associated with her, such as roses, and place them at a statue of Mary in your home or parish.
4. Prayers and Rosaries
Praying the rosary is a cherished devotion that brings us closer to Mary through meditation on the life of Christ. Gather with family and friends to pray the rosary, reflecting on the mysteries and seeking Mary’s intercession. This practice not only honors Mary but also nurtures spiritual growth and unity within your community.
5. Singing Marian Hymns
Singing Marian hymns is a joyful way to celebrate the feast. Hymns such as “Puso ko’y nagpupuri” (My Heart Rejoices) or “Salve Regina” (Hail, Holy Queen) are beautiful expressions of devotion. Incorporate these songs into your prayers or during gatherings to uplift hearts and honor Mary’s significance in our faith.
6. Candle Lighting
Lighting candles in honor of Mary symbolizes our prayers and hopes. Candles represent the light of Christ and the warmth of faith. Light candles in her honor as a sign of your devotion and as a symbol of your prayers for guidance, protection, and grace.
7. Wearing Blue
The color blue is traditionally associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary, symbolizing her purity and heavenly nature. On her feast day, consider wearing something blue—whether a dress, shirt, or accessory. This simple act of devotion can be a personal way to show your reverence and celebrate her special day.
Happy Birthday Mama Mary!
